Learning the ropes

Learning the ropes

Issue 213

WorkSafe has been in recruitment mode this year to lift its inspector numbers. Trainee health and safety inspector Jahvaan Byronwood, at the Albany office, tells us about his background and why he applied.

Prior to joining WorkSafe I worked in an engineering workshop where we designed and manufactured boat trailers. That role gave me hands-on experience in fabrication, and it’s also where I first learned to weld. I later built on that by completing my welding certification through a specialist welding school.

My experience with health and safety came from working in very different environments. I’ve worked in places where health and safety was treated as a top priority, and also in places where it was almost non-existent. That contrast gave me a good understanding of how much of a difference strong health and safety practices can make.

I came across the opportunity to join WorkSafe through one of the job listing websites – it caught my interest and here I am! I’ve always been aware of WorkSafe, and having experienced both strong and poor approaches to health and safety, I saw this as a really interesting opportunity. It felt like a role where I could use my background and make a real difference.

I believe what helped my application was the effort I put into preparing for each part of the recruitment process. I dedicated a lot of time to making sure I was ready, and I think that showed my commitment and motivation for the role.

The most challenging part of training so far has been developing the skill to take accurate notes in my notebook at the same time as engaging with the business and workers. It takes focus and practice to capture the right level of detail in real time, and I’m continuously working to improve this.

The most unexpected part of the role so far has been the level of support available. From my team, managers, and training resources, I’ve felt well supported every step of the way, which has been really encouraging.

The next step in my training journey is to apply what I’ve learned in practice while working towards my Certificate of Appointment. This will allow me to build hands-on experience and continue developing my skills as a health and safety inspector.

I’m based in Auckland at the Albany office – shoutout to the team! I’ve received amazing support, including mentoring during assessments and guidance with Atlas files (WorkSafe’s main system for recording and storing information). We have a team of knowledgeable people who are always happy to share their expertise, which has been incredibly helpful in my development.

If you’re interested in health and safety, WorkSafe is a fantastic place to be. You’ll continually learn and grow, receive strong support, and encounter a wide variety of situations that will help you develop your skills and experience.
