Safeguard Award finalists


The finalists in Safeguard’s 2008 NZ Workplace Health & Safety Awards have been announced.
The judging panel, - Dr Geraint Emrys from the Department of Labour, Ceri Davies from ACC, Rosaleen Loughman from the NZ Council of Trade Unions, Paul Squire, representing last year’s supreme winner, Ribbonwood, and Safeguard editor Jackie Brown-Haysom – was again delighted with the high standard represented by the 100-plus entries.

The winners in each of the eleven award categories, and the overall winner, will be announced at a gala dinner at Auckland’s SkyCity Convention Centre on Tuesday April 9.
The category finalists (in alphabetical order) are:

Department of Labour best initiative to address a safety hazard

  • Mainzeal Property and Construction, Wellington
  • Manukau City Council, Auckland
  • Naylor Love, Dunedin.

EBOS/Ansell best initiative to address a health hazard

  • Fletcher Construction, Tauranga harbour link
  • Siemens (NZ), Auckland.

OfficeMax best initiative to improve employee wellness

  • Clutha Health First, Balclutha
  • NZ Aluminium Smelters, Invercargill
  • NZ Customs Service, nationwide

NZ Safety best initiative to encourage employee engagement in health and safety

  • Fletcher Construction, Tauranga harbour link
  • Fletcher Easysteel, Auckland
  • Livingstone, Hamilton
  • Paewai Mullins Shearing, Dannevirke.

SICK best design or technology initiative

  • Action Tags, Hamilton

Air New Zealand best health and safety initiative by a small business

ACC best leadership of an industry sector or region

Safeguard health and safety practitioner of the year

Ross Wilson/NZCTU most influential employee

No finalists will be named for category 11, the Air New Zealand lifetime achievement award, but the successful candidates will be named at the awards dinner.
