Award categoriesNZ Workplace Health & Safety Awards 2007ORGANISATIONAL CATEGORIES An initiative to address a specific health and safety issue, out of which arose real, measurable improvements in productivity and hence business effectiveness. Productivity gains could have arisen from an engineering solution, or a change in systems or processes, or the elimination, isolation or minimisation of a hazard. Please provide evidence to show how a safety initiative led to improved productivity; or how a productivity initiative led to improved safety performance. An initiative in which an occupational health hazard has been identified and managed. Hazards include the traditional concerns of occupational health such as airborne substances, manual handling, infectious diseases, hazardous substances, thermal comfort, noise, and so on. Entries must outline the aim of the initiative and how it was carried out, with evidence of its success. This category covers broader, more holistic initiatives to address issues such as stress, fatigue, overuse conditions, fitness, nutrition, and health checks. Entries must show what the aim of the initiative was, and evidence of its success or impact. Entries must demonstrate a specific system to encourage employee participation in health and safety, plus evidence that the initiative encouraged a high level of involvement. Design factors and technological improvements can have a significant impact in eliminating hazards and improving workplace protection. Awarded to the design or technology initiative which best demonstrates effective solutions to health and safety issues. Note: This could encompass work by, among others, architects, engineers, product designers, ergonomists and IT professionals. This category recognises that smaller organisations face similar health and safety challenges as the big players but with far fewer resources. If your organisation has no more than 30 employees, and if you have devised and implemented an initiative to improve the health and safety of your organisation’s own staff, then by all means enter this category. Note: The presence of this category does not exclude small businesses from entering any of the other categories. Awarded to the organisation whose initiatives and leadership have demonstrably helped to lift workplace health and safety standards and practices in its industry sector or geographic region. Engineering and systems improvements can only improve health and safety performance so far. The third key element is the existence of a strong organisational culture which supports and encourages improvements in health and safety performance. Culture improvements initiatives could include newsletters, use of video/DVD, visual campaigns, innovative training/induction programmes, and moves to raise subcontractor standards. Evidence of their effectiveness is desirable. INDIVIDUAL CATEGORIES The person whose enthusiasm, knowledge and drive has made a substantial contribution to workplace health and safety. “Practitioner” means the person with formal responsibility for health and safety within an organisation. An employee or elected health and safety representative, who has acted as a champion of health and safety and who has had a significant positive influence on the health and safety culture of his or her organisation.
