New Zealand’s premier national health & safety conference!

The fourth Safeguard National Health and Safety Conference presented by Safeguard in association with the Department of Labour was held on the 15th and 16th of June at the SKYCITY Convention Centre in Auckland.

Working to the tag-line, “Knowledge is the best protection of all “delegates were inspired and informed by national and international HSE experts.

It was the biggest conference yet with over 200 health & safety professionals from all over New Zealand. There was a real buzz with delegates networking with each other and the speakers.

A few observations that caught our ears during the conference:

International keynote speaker Dr Rick Fulwiler advised us to make sure our strategy for health and safety is aligned with our organisation’s overall strategy, otherwise we are not going to make much headway.

Edmond Otis discussed a major study of employee absence carried out by Catalyst Risk Management, and noted that “the friction of doing business increases when we have unpredictable changes in staff.” He returned at the end of the second day to close out the conference with a fascinating discussion on how to have difficult conversations with colleagues (and others, for that matter).

Ken Rivers, CEO of The New Zealand Refining Company, gave a from-the-heart account of why he is passionate about health and safety, plus some tips on leadership. “The role of a leader is to paint a compelling vision of the future, a vision people can accept that it’s a place they want to go to. Then build and resource a coalition to achieve it. Then stand back.”

Rhonda Wilson took us on her journey through breast cancer and how her company’s policies on return to work – which she had helped create – were found wanting and were amended.

David Tregoweth promised to offend everyone at some point in his presentation as he considered how well New Zealand’s OHS performance stacks up against that of other countries. He delivered.

It was a terrific conference, and just so you know we’re not just saying that, here is a selection of comments made by the delegates:

“I can honestly say that this conference is the best I have ever been to”

“Well done, outstanding conference”

“Thought provoking, empowering, ideas to take back to work, good networking”

“Great conference gets better every year”

“I found this conference an excellent vehicle for professional development and networking”
