ALLIANCE CONSTRUCTION LTD was fined $35,000 under s18(1)(a) after a scaffolding contractor suffered serious spinal injuries when he fell through a roof void on a partially built apartment block. The injured man, who is paralysed below the chest, was given a safety induction when he arrived on site but was not told about the void, which was covered with plywood and black polythene. He stepped into the opening as he crossed the roof and fell 6.6m. No reparation order was made as the defendant had already paid him $100,000 ( Auckland DC, November 26).
