TOP HAT CONVENIENCE FOODS LTD was fined $8000 under s6 and ordered to pay $3000 in reparations after an employee’s hand was lacerated in the auger of a food mixing machine. The injured man was standing on top of the machine, removing cheese from a feeding bin, when he slipped and his hand was caught by the auger. He received a cut to his palm that required 27 stitches. Employees had been told not to stand on the machine, but it had become the accepted practice when handling sticky products that needed to be manually fed into the mixer ( Manukau DC, June 16).
