OSH Tracker

Defendant:
CMP Canterbury
CMP CANTERBURY was fined $12,000 under s18(1)(a) and ordered to pay $4000 in reparations to a cleaning contractor whose arm was crushed in an offal auger. There were three hatches in the auger, two of which were intended for inspection only, and a third which was interlocked to an electrical shut-off switch. The injured woman, who usually worked in another part of the plant, attempted to remove offal from the auger using one of the small inspection hatches, assuming that the auger had been turned off. She suffered a compound fracture of the humerus and possible nerve damage (Ashburton DC, January 31).
