Department of Labour v Sleepyhead Manufacturing Co Ltd (DC, 29/07/05)

OSH Tracker

Defendant:
Sleepyhead Manufacturing Co Ltd
SLEEPYHEAD MANUFACTURING CO LTD was fined $30,000 under s6 and ordered to pay $3000 in reparations after an employee fractured his arm in two places and lacerated his right hand while attempting to clear a blockage in a carding machine. The machine was guarded, but because staff had to reach into the area from time to time to clear build-ups of material, the guards were hinged, giving access to a conveyor belt. The injured man said the belt was stopped when he reached into the machine, but it restarted before he could remove his arm. There was a stop button in the work area, but the conveyor was also controlled by remote detectors which could automatically stop and start it without warning (Manukau DC, July 29).
