Department of Labour v Pallet Packaging (DC, 12/05/05)

OSH Tracker

Defendant:
Pallet Packaging
PALLET PACKAGING LTD was fined $9000 under s6 and ordered to pay $5000 in reparations after an employee suffered a severe laceration to his wrist while using an inadequately guarded radial arm saw. The injured worker was loading timber into a feed tray when one piece fell into the path of the blade. The saw caught the wood and kicked back, propelling itself towards the worker. He moved out of the way but was not quick enough to prevent it striking his wrist, damaging tendons and arteries, and shaving the scaphoid bone. The saw was fitted with a hood guard, but had neither a frontal guard, to restrict access to the blade, nor a limiting device, to stop it moving beyond the edge of the saw bench ( Manukau DC, May 12).
