PORTS OF AUCKLAND LTD was fined $10,000 under s6 and ordered to pay $15,000 in reparations after a shipping container fell while by being moved by a straddle carrier, crashing into the cab of the vehicle and crushing the operator’s hand and bruising his leg. As the container was being raised, the chains securing the rear broke. Subsequent inspection found they were corroded and suffering metal fatigue. The injured man had a finger surgically reattached after the accident (Auckland DC, July 20).
