NEW ZEALAND STEEL LTD was fined $8000 under s6 and ordered to pay $5000 in reparations after an employee suffered chemical burns to his legs when he walked through a trough of caustic soda solution while repairing a slab casting machine. Caustic liquid had pooled beneath the machine and the injured man did not realise that a water supply that was intended to dilute the solution before it entered the trough had failed (Pukekohe DC, October 13).
