BIG BALE CONTRACTING LTD was fined $5000 under s6 and ordered to pay $20,000 in reparations after an employee’s hand was amputated in a hay baling machine. The injured man had been instructed to remove the transmission cover and oil the machine while it was running. When he dropped the oil bottle, he instinctively reached into the machine to retrieve it, and his thumb was caught on a cog, pulling his arm into the transmission. Before he could pull himself clear, his hand had been severed (Blenheim DC, November 2).
