OSH Tracker

Defendant:
Eastern Transmission and Installation Company
EASTERN TRANSMISSION AND INSTALLATION COMPANY was fined $12,000 under s6 after a trainee line mechanic suffered multiple injuries when he fell 9 metres from a power pole after receiving an 11kV shock from a power line. The injured worker had climbed the pole, as instructed by his supervisor, to secure a winch rope. The lines had not been isolated, the worker was not secured to the pole with a safety strap, he was not using an adequate work platform and he should not have been carrying the metal winch rope while climbing the pole. The supervisor, who was away from the immediate area when the accident occurred, was also charged under s19(b), but had this charge withdrawn when the company accepted liability. The injured man, who suffered spinal injuries, burns, chipped teeth, a severed lip, ruptured spleen, and lacerations to his pancreas and lungs, was awarded $9000 of the fine. (Tauranga DC, 1 July.)
