THE NIAGARA SAWMILLING COMPANY LTD was fined $1000 under s6 and ordered to pay $4554.72 in reparations after a worker’s leg was caught in the in-running nip of a conveyor belt. A malfunction in the conveyor system had carried a load of timber off-cuts past their intended destination, and the injured worker was attempting to kick them back to the right place when his lower leg was caught in a chain-and-sprocket drive. His right calf was degloved and he spent 19 days in hospital. Two weeks before the accident sawmilling equipment that had abutted the conveyor and prevented access to the trapping points had been removed (Invercargill DC, 19 December.)
