Painting contractor GMR HOLMAC LTD was fined $20,000 under s.13(b) and $5000 under s.10(2)(b) of the HSE Act after two employees were found to be using isocyanate paint without proper respiratory protection – one month after a prohibition notice had been issued forbidding work until air-fed respirators were in use. The paint in use – Interthane 990 – was the same on both occasions. The Approved COP for the Safe Use of Isocyanates states that air-fed respirators must be worn when using isocyanate paints, even outside. (Hamilton DC, 9 December)
