Defendant:
Jenkin Timber
JENKIN TIMBER LTD was fined $6000 under s6 after an employee lost the tip of his right finger when his spanner slipped while he was adjusting a pressure shoe mounted over an unguarded cutter head. The company had identified the hazard and recommended using small width cutter heads. However, this was not practical given the range of widths required to be cut. A guard should have been fitted. The injured man was awarded $5000. (Waitakere DC, 26 January)
