OSH Tracker

Defendant:
Mainzeal Property and Construction
MAINZEAL PROPERTY AND CONSTRUCTION LTD was fined $4000 under r53(1)(b) of the HSE Regulations 1995 for failing to ensure all people dismantling scaffolding at a height above 5m held a current certificate of competence. When the scaffolding fell, the two harnessed subcontractors dismantling it free-fell 1.5m and rode the collapsing scaffolding down until it came to rest on the platform below. They suffered minor bruising, lacerations and shock. An employee of another subcontractor, who had been standing on the platform onto which the scaffolding collapsed, saw what was about to happen and tried to get the attention of the two men. He climbed down just before the collapse. (Auckland DC, 21 March)
