JOHN SULLIVAN PAINTING CONTRACTORS LTD was fined a total of $3500 after two employees were observed waterblasting a roof at a height of 7 to 8m without adequate fall protection. The inspector had warned the company the day before. One man was on the roof, the other in a cherrypicker at roof level. The man on the roof was connected by 10mm rope "safety line" to a fixed point on the cherrypicker. The length of the rope was more than 3m longer than the working height. Neither had received training on fall arrest systems. The fines were: $1000 under s13(a), $1000 under s13(b), $1000 for breaching r21(2) of the HSE Regulations 1995, and $500 for breaching r26(2).
