COMPUTER TRANSPORT SERVICES (NEW ZEALAND) LTD was fined $20,000 under s6 after a 360kg computer cabinet fell on an employee as it was unloaded by forklift from a trailer unit at Auckland airport. The man’s spinal injuries were so severe he is now a tetraplegic. The 1.7m high cabinet had been loaded by the company’s Wellington staff, who had placed it on a pallet which was too small for it. Nor was it secured to the pallet or forklift during unloading. As it was lifted off the truck it slipped off the side of the tynes, striking the victim and narrowly missing the truck driver. No procedures were in place for unloading from the side using a forklift. (Otahuhu DC, 2 June)
