JHL PAINT MANAGEMENT SERVICES LTD was fined $15,000 under s6 after an employee suffered chemical burns from paint stripper containing hydrofluoric acid, resulting in the amputation of part of his middle finger and the tips of another finger and thumb. He used several pairs of latex gloves while using the stripper over a period of two hours, but the gloves leaked. The stripper had been purchased three years before and was known to be unsuitable. It was not intended for application by hand, and the MSDS which came with it had been filed. The employee was awarded $10,000. (Otahuhu DC, 29 September)
