Packaging manufacturer DANCO (NZ) LTD was fined $7000 under s6 after an employee had three fingers crushed - one later amputated - when her hand was caught in the unguarded nip point created by a air bubble bag machine’s rollers. The guard had been removed because it was damaging the product. The injured woman was awarded $3500. (Waitakere DC, 9 July) On the same day the company was fined $7000 under s6 and $2500 under s7(1)(a) after an employee had a thumb degloved in another bubble bag machine barely two weeks after the earlier incident. The man slipped while about to adjust a fixed blade and caught his hand in unguarded rollers, which had not been identified as a hazard. The injured man was awarded $2000.
