MASCOT was fined a total of $10,000 on the same day in court after an employee splashed by a caustic soda mix suffered a burn to his left eye. The man was wearing safety glasses and overalls unsuitable for chemical protection. He should have been provided with a full face shield, protective apron, gumboots and PVC gloves, resulting in a $5000 fine under s6. Nor had he been trained in safely dealing with caustic soda, resulting in a $5000 fine under s13(b). He was awarded a total of $6000.
