BHP NEW ZEALAND STEEL LTD was fined $15,000 under s6 after an employee suffered serious burns when blowback occurred while tapping on melter. No shield was provided, and there were no set rules about the protective clothing required for the task. A previous blowback incident in 1995 had highlighted the problem. The injured worker, who was hospitalised for three weeks and required a skin graft, was awarded $7500 of the fine. (Pukekohe DC, 12 May)
