HILL COUNTRY BEEF (NZ) LTD was fined $9500 under s6 after an employee's left arm became trapped in the jaws of a hock and horn beef carcass cutter. The machine had been modified so that it could be activated with only one hand instead of the original two-hand operation. An original safety feature causing the hydraulics to fail to a safety position if the air supply was cut had also been removed. The injured man, who suffered a partial amputation of his left hand and lower forearm, was awarded three quarters of the fine. (Napier DC, 18 November)
