Affco New Zealand Ltd was fined a total of $2000 on three charges after a worker's hand came into contact with the blade of a bone-cutting bandsaw. The machine's standard height-adjustable guard was not able to be adjusted at the time, leaving 25cm of the blade exposed. The operator - who received a severe laceration to the left thumb tip and partial nail loss - had not been told of the guard mechanism. (Tauranga DC, 24 May)
