Use of an incorrect method for lifting a concrete pipe led to Hume Industries Ltd being fined $5500 after an employee received fractures to his right arm and deep lacerations to his forehead. The defendant had departed from normal practice in pipe lifting and had used an unsafe method during a 'rush job'. The injured worker received $3000 of the fine. (Nelson DC, 24 January)
