Dairy farmer Barry Flint was fined a total of $15,000 after pleading guilty to two charges under s18 of the HSE Act, namely failing as a principal to ensure that a contractor was not harmed and that an employee of a contractor was not harmed. Fines of $7500 were imposed on each charge.  A sharemilker and his employee contracted leptospirosis from an infected herd which had not been vaccinated for 10 years, despite the introduction of more cattle into the herd in recent years.  An award of $2000 each from the total fine was made to both affected workers.
