A fine of $7500 was imposed on Downer and Company Limited following an accident in which a worker slipped on loose gravel and fell 20 metres into the Clutha River.  While the hazard of the exposed edge had been identified by the firm, no guard rails or barriers had been put in place, though the materials for these were on site and guard rails were put up immediately after the accident.  The injured man was awarded $4000 of the fine. (Dunedin DC, 14 November 1994)
