VITA NEW ZEALAND LTD was convicted under s6 and fined $5500 after an employee’s arm and wrist were caught in the gears and rollers of a fibre machine which had been switched off but not yet come to a halt. The victim, who was awarded $5000, is unable to return to work. The machine was guarded but the employee gained access because the key was permanently left in the door. An interlock device had been fitted but not connected. (Auckland DC, 11 February)
