In an unusual move, a building products manufacturer is to donate A$50,000 to the Safety Institute of Australia as part of an enforceable undertaking accepted by the Victorian WorkCover Authority under Victoria’s OH&S Act 2004.

Ardex Australia Pty Ltd was facing charges arising from an incident in October 2016 in which two people suffered burns after an explosion caused by the operation of a dry powder mixing machine adjacent to welding activity which was producing hot metal slag, causing an explosive dust-air mixture to form.

Instead, as part of an EU accepted by VWA in December, and in order to contribute to community awareness of H&S, the company will donate the sum to the SIA to enable it to develop a new chapter about systems of work in its OHS Body of Knowledge.

The chapter will be entitled ‘Rules, procedures and documentation.’
