WorkSafe NZ has accepted the company's enforceable undertaking following an angle grinder incident in which the blade shattered, causing fragments to strike the worker on the face and penetrate his safety glasses. The company had procedures in place but they were not followed. The company's undertakings are expected to cost at least $189,000 and include providing professional development opportunities to the victim, revising its contractor prequalification process, developing a contractor induction pack, sharing lessons on alternative cutting methods, presenting to industry associations and developing seminars, making a payment to a helicopter rescue service, and establishing a scholarship to support tertiary study in health & safety.

Whitford Park Golf Club Inc

WorkSafe NZ has accepted the club's enforceable undertaking following an incident where a volunteer for another group was at the golf club assisting with fundraising activities, including using a log splitter to produce wood for sale. His finger was amputated when it was caught between the log and the back plate of the machine. The club's undertakings are expected to cost at least $70,000 and include presenting the lessons learned to a meeting of golf club superintendents and distributing them to every golf club in the country; publishing an article in a golf magazine; presenting on H&S to the local Whitford community; establishing a development programme for young players (including a H&S component); and providing a payment to the injured man with honorary club membership.
