Exposure to silica during a 20-year career as a stonemason, combined with a genetic predisposition, could have caused a man’s incurable auto-immune condition scleroderma, in which an over-production of collagen attacks healthy organs.

The NZ Herald reports the 44-year-old was slowly being paralysed by the condition. He died a few days later.
