Associate health minister Peter Dunne has warned employers not to use workplace drug testing as cover for a de facto punitive measure.

The NZ Herald reports his view that drug testing is being used by some employers in a way that the law did not intend.

He acknowledged that drug testing had a place in high-risk work environments, but said "let us not lose sight of the health and safety reasons for it, and not start using it as a de facto law enforcement and punitive measure."

He also criticised comments by the chief executive of drug testing company TDDA, who was reported earlier this year saying that employers "certainly don't want someone who's got an addiction problem entering into their workplace."
