Professional registration for health and safety practitioners must become a question of when, not if, the chair of the Health and Safety Association of New Zealand (HASANZ) told the conference.

Responding to a question from the floor during the panel discussion, Craig Smith pointed out that, for several of the groups that make up HASANZ, including occupational physicians, physiotherapists and occupational therapists, mandatory registration is already in place.

The question of whether compulsory registration is also needed for health and safety generalists was considered carefully by the Independent Taskforce on Workplace Health and Safety, he said, and the decision was made to instead promote membership of the industry’s professional bodies.

“They didn’t think the New Zealand market was mature enough,” Smith said. “Would we get enough people registered to get over the bar?

“However I think we should now be starting to create conversations that set an expectation of registration in the future.

“I’m not sure we’re there yet, but when you look at the problem end of the market there has be a way of creating barriers to entry that will exclude the cowboys and snake oil merchants.”
