Government-funded courses to brief existing health and safety reps about their new responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act are filling fast.

Rowan McKenzie, CEO of Safety 'n Action, the sole provider selected by MBIE to design and deliver a fully funded transition training scheme, says face-to-face courses are already happening around the country, and online ones will commence before the end of the month.

The courses were developed in consultation with WorkSafe, and interest in both types of training has been strong. "Places are still available, but filling fast. We urge all health and safety reps to book their training as soon as possible, to avoid the disappointment of missing out."

The company has funding to train 15,000 serving reps, with the bulk of these courses - 12,000 of them - to be delivered online. Face-to-face training takes four hours, while the online format requires approximately three-and-a-half hours' work, but can be completed at the trainee's own pace, provided it is done before the end of May.

McKenzie says reps from all levels are taking part in the training, most of which has been held at Safety 'n Action training centres, although some larger organisations have had it conducted in their workplaces. The free transition courses will come to an end in May, but Safety 'n Action plans to introduce a two-day Unit Standard-based course for new reps in April.
