Safer companies are more competitive companies, says Sunday Star-Times business commentator Rod Oram.

In his weekly Business Viewpoint column, Oram says developing a strong collaborative culture is the key to improving safety and performance overall.

He points to a free app created by Civil Contractors NZ, the association of companies that build and maintain New Zealand’s infrastructure, which enables even the smallest of its members or subcontractors to be systematic about safety.

The New Zealand Transport Agency is one of the biggest users of the app. Its Zero Harm adviser John Harper-Slade told a recent logistics conference the effort on safer practices has significant financial benefits.

He said international studies show that for every $1 of injury costs a company can identify, there are between $8 and $36 of hidden cost, depending on the risk profile of the business.

Oram says there are many positive elements in the new Health and Safety at Work Act, but there is still a mountain to climb.

He urges the Government to write practical and effective regulations before the Act takes effect next year, and says it should put much more emphasis on the sort of collaborative private sector effort championed by Civil Contractors NZ and their app.
