The Business Leaders' Health and Safety Forum has come out against the absence of most types of farming from the list of high-risk industry sectors, saying it sends "completely the wrong message" to the farming sector.

Forum executive director Francois Barton acknowledges the exemption applies only to one part of the Health and Safety Reform Bill, and that farmers will still have to engage and involve their workers in health and safety.

"However, telling farmers they work in a low risk industry can only undermine the agricultural sector’s motivation to change in response to the new law. We risk facing a situation where other high risk industries, like forestry and construction, are taking ownership and making improvements and farming gets left behind.”

Meanwhile a host of commentators mocked the high-risk list for including an ANZSIC category which includes apparently innocuous activities such as dog breeding and worm farming.
