Data from a recent salary survey of Australian OHS practitioners shows that remuneration at the very highest levels of the profession continues to accelerate further away from that at lower levels.

Speaking at the recent SIA National Safety Convention in Melbourne, organised by Informa, Matthew Belleghem from Safesearch presented the results of their 2013/14 survey of 130 organisations, as well as an analysis of remuneration trends over the past eight years.

Roles at the highest level - general manager OHS/HSE - averaged around $335,000 (all figures are in Australian dollars), showing a strong and steady rise from the $225K low of 2009/10.

Next level down, national manager, averaged $206,000 and has risen only gently in the last few years.

The third of Safesearch's figure levels, manager, averaged $164K - a slight decline from the previous year, though still well ahead of the $130K reported back in 2009/10.

Fourth level, advisor/coordinator, averaged $116K, again a slight decline from the previous year but ahead of the $95K of 2009/10.

The lowest level, officer, averaged $80K and had risen only slightly in recent years.

Belleghem said there were significant regional differences, with the mining boom states of Western Australia and Queensland suffering major falls in pay: at manager level, pay went down 20% in WA and 10% in Queensland. The downturn in mining, he said, had seen a rush of people in those states seeking to upgrade their OHS qualifications, reflecting the national rising demand for formal qualifications. Two-thirds of people at manager level now hold an undergraduate degree or better, a significant rise even from last year.

Taking the results overall, he said the safety function had been consolidated but overall commitment to OHS had increased, meaning there was pressure to do more with less. "What was just the head of health and safety is now likely to have risk or environment or security added to the role."

As well as asking about remuneration the survey also asked about issues of concern. Top emerging issue was dealing with mental health and wellbeing - 40% flagged it as their top issue - while 65% reported difficulty in finding good talent, and 25% had concerns about the ageing workforce.
