Work-related fatality figures updated to the end of 2013 show the agricultural sector continues to account for about one-third of the deaths each year.

WorkSafe NZ's data for 2013 shows that of 51 notified fatalities, 18 - or 35% - were classified as occurring in the agricultural sector, compared to 14 (30%) in 2012 and 17 (37%) in 2011.

Forestry's awful year is reflected in 10 fatalities for 2013, compared to an average of just over four deaths annually in the six previous years.

There were six deaths in the construction sector, where the average in the six preceding years was nine (including a spike of 18 fatalities in 2009).

The other sector contributing significantly to the death toll was transport, postal and warehousing, which accounted for five fatalities.
