WorkSafe New Zealand has criticised organisers of a farmers' day out for failing to require helmets be worn on quad bikes in Taranaki hill country, according to a Fairfax NZ News report.

Organised by Beef + Lamb New Zealand, few of the 200 people on a cavalcade of quad bikes wore helmets, and some carried passengers too.

WorkSafe's quad bike programme manager, Francois Barton, said it was "simply astonishing" that a national organisation would fail to require helmets and that no passengers be carried, and that enforcement notices would have been issued had inspectors been present.

Farmers' excuses for not wearing helmets were invalid, he said.

However one farmer at the venue, Aotuhia Station, had the last word in the Fairfax story. "I've been riding a quad bike for donkeys' years and I haven't killed myself yet."
