Safety consultant Andy Loader has assumed the leadership of the New Zealand Safety Council following the retirement of its founder David Calvert.

Calvert stepped down early this month after 11 years at the helm of the organisation, which he established in 2002. He previously had a long association with the NZ Institute of Safety Management, serving as both national president and Auckland branch chairman.

Loader, from South Auckland, is a former quarry inspector who has been working as a consultant for 16 years. He says he is keen to build the council's membership, and will be working to promote its newly developed Level 5 diploma course for health and safety practitioners.

Jodi Wright has been appointed national secretary of the council.
