The workplace fatality rate in Britain has fallen to 0.5 deaths per 100,000 workers per year, well below the five-year average of 0.6 per 100,000.

Provisional figures released by the Health and Safety Executive show 148 workplace fatalities in the year ending 31 March 2013, compared with 172 in the previous year. Of the 148 deaths, 118 occurred in England (overall rate: 0.5/100,000), 22 in Scotland (overall rate : 0.9/100,000), and eight in Wales (overall rate: 0.6/100,000).

By industry sector, the 148 fatalities included 39 in construction (1.9 deaths/100,000 workers), 29 in agriculture (8.8/100,000), and 10 in waste and recycling (8.2/100,000).

The HSE's analysis shows the British fatality rate has remained the lowest among the five leading industrial nations in Europe - the other four being Germany, France, Spain and Italy - for the eighth successive year.
