Acting Minister of Labour Chris Finlayson has told Parliament that the Government is looking to implement all 16 recommendations of the Pike River Royal Commission, including the first of them: to set up a separate agency focusing solely on health and safety.

He said MBIE and the independent taskforce on health and safety were both looking at the matter, and guidance on how to achieve it was expected early in 2013.

"The Government regards this issue - health and safety - as a top tier issue, which is why we are giving very serious consideration to the exact shape, form, and function of the new regulator. The ministry is also going to have a major policy involvement in those issues."

In a parallel development, all 150 health and safety inspectors employed by MBIE are having to re-apply for new roles. Reported in the Dominion Post, the Public Service Association says the new plan would define three types of health & safety inspector: assessment, investigation, and response.

Coincidentally or otherwise, the New Zealand Herald reports that health and safety staff within MBIE head office are being moved to the former Defence Department head office in Stout St.
