Seismic activity and resulting deaths in Christchurch have highlighted the risks for workplaces located in earthquake-prone areas.

Since the February 2011 collapse of several central city workplaces, many buildings have been assessed by engineers as being "earthquake prone".

In Earthquake Prone Buildings and the Health and Safety in Employment Act, lawyers at Bell Gully explain the various responsibilities of employers and landlords as they relate to the risk of a building collapsing in the event of an earthquake.

The piece concludes with the warning that the courts are likely to take the view that the Canterbury earthquakes have put employers on notice of the risk of serious harm arising from building collapse in an earthquake.
