Going on the construction industry's current safety record, the Canterbury rebuild could lead to 50 workplace deaths by 2018, reports The Press. Claims for injuries sustained during the rebuild are estimated to cost ACC $80 million.

The figures were given by labour minister Kate Wilkinson at the Christchurch Safe Rebuild Seminar, who also said it is likely 600,000 hours will be lost to injury and illness during the rebuild, based on current rates.

Also in attendance was the UK's Health and Safety Executive chairwoman Judith Hackitt, who told the audience that the construction of the London Olympic Games venues was the first modern games construction project with zero fatalities.

Wilkinson pointed out that New Zealand workers are six times more likely to be injured at work than their counterparts in the UK. This, she said, in unacceptable.
