A new study from the US has confirmed what many might already have suspected - insomnia leads to mistakes and accidents at work.

MedPage Today reports the study found 20 percent of more than 4900 employed participants suffered from insomnia and that this sleep disorder was linked to a 40 percent increased risk of workplace incidents that cost their employer $500 or more.

The researchers estimated insomnia was associated with 7.2 percent of all costly workplace accidents and tend to be more costly than mistakes not made because of insomnia. The average cost of insomnia-related accidents and errors was $32,062, compared to an average of $21,914 for non-insomnia-related accidents.

It is estimated that the total cost to the US from insomnia-related workplace accidents and errors is over $30 billion a year.

The full study is published in the October 2012 edition of Archives of General Psychiatry.
