Two people have been recognised by Standards New Zealand for their work in developing standards related to health and safety.

Bill Birch, technical manager with Responsible Care New Zealand, has since 1983 contributed to five reviews of NZS 5433 Transport of dangerous goods on land, the most recent earlier this year, and has long been a representative on the Joint Australian/New Zealand Technical Committee CH-009 Safe handling of chemicals. He was also a major contributor to the joint handbook HB 76:2010 Dangerous Goods - Initial Emergency Response Guide.

Nelson-based Peter Fisher, now a consultant after more than 30 years with the Department of Labour, has been a member of ISO/TC 127 Earth moving machinery since 2000 and led a working group on roll-over protection for excavators. The group developed ISO 12117-2:2008 Earth-moving machinery - Laboratory tests and performance requirements for protective structures of excavators - Part 2: Roll-over protective structures (ROPS) for excavators of over 6 t.

Both men recently received Meritorious Service Awards from SNZ.
